Can’t UV-LED Print on That? UV-DTF Solves It!
Why UV-DTF is Changing Personalization
When it comes to decorating curved hard surfaces, traditional direct UV-LED printing can sometimes limit what’s possible. That’s where UV-DTF transfers come in. From full-color personalization to detailed branding on uniquely shaped blanks, UV-DTF opens the door to decorating surfaces that are difficult to print on directly.
Using a UV-DTF printer like the Epson SureColor V1070, makers can print vibrant, durable designs onto transfer film first, then apply them directly to the final substrate. This makes it easier to create UV-DTF decals for products like tumblers, planters, candle jars, and more.
One of the biggest opportunities with this technology is creating UV-DTF cup wraps, allowing you to achieve stunning full-wrap drinkware designs that look professionally printed from edge to edge. Instead of being limited by the curved shape of a cup or tumbler, you can create seamless, full-wrap artwork using UV-DTF transfer film.
With the NEW Magic Film AP UV-DTF Transfer Film from Johnson Plastics Plus, the process becomes even easier helping makers expand their UV-LED printing capabilities and bring more personalized products to market.

What is UV-DTF?
UV-DTF (UV Direct-to-Film), is a transfer method that allows you to apply full-color designs to hard surfaces by printing onto film first, then transferring the design onto your final blank.
Using a UV-DTF printer, like the Epson SureColor V1070, your design is printed and cured onto a specialty film, like Magic Film AP UV-DTF Transfer Film. From there, the printed design is applied as a UV-DTF decal, making it perfect for items like tumblers and other curved blanks.
The biggest difference between UV-DTF and direct UV printing is where the design is printed. With direct UV printing, the design is printed straight onto the surface of the blank, which works best for flat items. With UV-DTF, the design is printed onto film first and then transferred, making it ideal for curved or hard-to-print surfaces.
This makes UV-DTF a great solution for creating decals or full-wrap curved object designs that would otherwise be difficult to achieve with direct UV-printing alone.
Meet the NEW Magic Film AP UV-DTF Transfer Film
Magic Film AP is a specialty film designed for creating UV-DTF transfers using your UV-LED printer. It allows you to print your design onto film first, then transfer it onto a wide range of hard surfaces especially those that are curved or difficult to print on directly.
When used with a UV-DTF printer like the Epson SureColor V1070, Magic Film AP helps you produce vibrant, durable UV-DTF decals for drinkware and other hard curved surface blanks. This makes it a powerful solution for expanding your product offerings without being limited to flat substrates.
How to use Magic Film AP:
Creating UV-DTF transfers with Magic Film AP is a simple, repeatable process:
- Print Your Design - Print your artwork onto the Magic Film AP using your UV-LED printer. The design is instantly cured, creating a vibrant, durable image.
- Apply the Adhesive Film - Place the adhesive (B) film over your printed design (A film) and use a squeegee to ensure your design transfers to the (B) film.
- Peel and Prepare - Carefully peel away the carrier sheet, making sure your design does not stay adhered to the transfer layer. If you notice any part of the design is not lifting, don’t panic- it’s an easy fix. Just lay the carrier sheet back down and use your squeegee to apply firm pressure over the area that needs a little extra help. Then continue peeling and move on to the next step.
- Apply to Your Surface - Position the transfer onto your final substrate. Like the previous step, start by using your thumb to firmly press the film over the substrate. After it has been positioned the way you would like, use a squeegee and your finger nail to ensure every piece of the design has been transferred to your blank.
- Remove Film - Slowly peel away the top film to reveal your finished design. Like peeling away the carrier sheet in the previous step, if your design starts to stick to your transfer sheet and not adhering to your blank, do not panic! Simply lay the carrier sheet back to your blank, squeegee that section again, and retry.
