How do you sublimate tumblers?

Sublimating tumblers is a process that allows you to transfer designs onto a tumbler's surface using heat and special sublimation ink. The result is a high-quality, durable image that's resistant to peeling or fading. Here's a simplified step-by-step guide on how to sublimate tumblers: 

Materials Needed:

• Sublimation tumblers (usually coated with a polyester coating)
• Sublimation ink and printer (e.g., Sawgrass or Epson)
• Sublimation paper 
• Heat-resistant tape
• Heat gun and shrink wrap film sleeve
• Convection oven, dedicated sublimation oven, or a Heat-resistant gloves
• Design software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, CorelDRAW) 
• Optional: Teflon sheet or butcher paper to protect the oven from ink bleed 

Steps to Sublimate Your Tumblers

Preparing the Design:

• Design Creation: Use design software to create your image. Make sure the design dimensions fit the tumbler size. TIP: Download tumbler template for our tech docs on the product page
• Mirror Image: Mirror your image so the design is facing the correct way after it’s sublimated 
• Printing: Print the design using a printer loaded with sublimation ink onto sublimation paper. 

Preparing the Tumbler: 

• Clean the Tumbler: Thoroughly clean the tumbler's surface to remove any oils or residues. 
• Position the Design: Wrap the printed sublimation paper around the tumbler and secure it tightly using heat-resistant tape. 
• Wrap Protection: Optional but recommended, wrap the tumbler with a heat-resistant tape or a shrink wrap film sleeve to ensure uniform heat distribution. 

Sublimation Process: 

• Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven or mug press to the temperature recommended for your specific tumbler (usually between 350-400°F or 175-200°C). 
• Baking Time: Place the tumbler in the oven for the time specified by the manufacturer, usually around 6-10 minutes for an oven and 1-3 minutes for a mug press. 
• Monitoring: Carefully watch the tumbler to prevent overheating, which can cause the design to fade or the tumbler to deform. 

Final Steps: 

• Remove Wraps and Paper: Once the time is up, remove the shrink wrap, heat-tape, and sublimation paper to reveal the design. The tumbler will be extremely hot coming out of the press or oven, so wear heat gloves while removing the paper. 
• Cool Down: Set your tumbler aside to let it cool or place it in a bucket of room temperature water to speed up the cooling process 
• Inspect: Check the quality of the sublimation. If satisfied, your tumbler is ready for use or sale.
