Studs are the hardware that holds a project together. They connect a cap to its barrel, but because you can’t see them once the project is finished, they are often a design after thought. With a little background information, you can choose the correct stud, or if you prefer, call for a professional recommendation.

When selecting the right standoff mounting hardware, there are four key factors to consider to ensure a secure and professional installation. First, determine the thread depth of your standoff cap, as this affects how much of the stud will engage. Next, understand how far the standoff stud can be inserted into the barrel. You’ll also need to account for the material thickness of what you’re mounting, whether it’s acrylic, metal, or glass. Finally, confirm that your standoff cap, barrel, and stud share the same thread size for proper compatibility. If you’re working with glass, be sure to include additional thickness for protective vinyl washers, which help prevent damage during installation.

For example, let’s say you’re mounting a piece of 1/8" acrylic signage using a barrel and a cap. The cap has a 1/4" thread depth, while the barrel is fully tapped. However, you’ll also need to factor in space for the anchor, which reduces how far the stud can extend into the barrel. In this case, plan for approximately 3/8" of stud insertion depth. With the acrylic measuring 1/8" thick, the ideal solution would be a 3/4" long standoff stud threaded in 5/16-18.

While exact measurements may vary depending on your project, understanding these fundamentals of choosing the right standoff hardware will help ensure a clean, secure installation every time.
